Muslim Beliefs About Death

The Islamic faith holds a profound belief in the afterlife. Muslims adhere to the principle that an individual’s actions during their lifetime determine their fate in the hereafter. Those who perform good deeds and follow the teachings of Islam will be rewarded with entry into Paradise on the Day of Judgement. On this day, Muslims believe the world will end, and the deceased will either experience eternal peace in Paradise or eternal suffering in Hell.

The Spiritual Significance of Muslim Funerals
Islamic funerals are deeply spiritual and serve as pivotal events within Muslim communities. These ceremonies not only provide comfort to the bereaved but also offer an opportunity for communal prayer, seeking Allah’s mercy for the deceased.

Planning an Islamic Funeral
Islamic law (sharia) mandates that funeral arrangements commence immediately following the death of a loved one. There is no tradition of viewings or visits. Instead, mourners gather in the mosque's prayer room to perform funeral prayers for the deceased.

Funeral Prayers and Procession
The funeral service begins with mourners assembling at the mosque to recite alāt al-Janāzah, the Islamic funeral prayer, which seeks forgiveness for the deceased and all Muslims. Participants form at least three rows, facing Mecca, the holy center of Islam.
Following the prayer, the body is transported to the burial site. The grave is oriented perpendicular to Mecca, with the deceased positioned on their right side, facing the “Qibla”.

Duration of the Funeral Service
An Islamic funeral usually lasts 30 to 60 minutes. Led by an imam, the service includes funeral prayers and readings from the Quran.

Post-Funeral:

Following the funeral, the family hosts mourners at their home, where guests often bring food to ease the family’s burden. The mourning period lasts 3 days. For widows, the mourning period is longer, spanning four months and ten days. The widow should be staying home during this period.
